new video wot I done made innit

Post by Citizen Dolly »

Just finished this video for a track from 2 years back, cos I'm totally on the ball with with this promotional shit. :P The video's a bunch of not-quite-random shots from the area where I grew up. Ended up filming summat ridiculous like 80 mins of stuff, knowing fine well that the song is under 5 mins long and there was no way I'd be able to squeeze everything in. The song itself is one of my mellower things with actual singing in it. It's off the same EP as that "Territoriality" song I also did a vid for a while back (the "behind / inside the song" thingy) Anyway, you might like the song even if you don't rate the video...

Enjoy and ting.

 I don't have a proper camera: this was shot on an old tablet, no gimbol or owt to stabilise the shots, hence the shakiness.

Holy fuck, that's a sentimental sounding track. Coming from you, that's weird. Well mixed and produced as always. That one piano is almost a bit too much, the tinny toy sounding one. As to the video, I find video editing a chore. I found an editor where I can download royalty free clips, then hit a button that says "Match to music". Viola, instant video. You're looks positively professional compared to that.

Cheers Henry! I get what you mean about it sounding sentimental, and I suppose in isolation it is, but I think it's a touch less so in the context of the full EP. Actually, even the first verse was aimed at undermining that. Of course, the music is pretty syrupy and that doesn't help my case really... :lol2: However, there is a sort of narrative arc to the EP, beginning with moving away from the council estate (track 1), briefly zipping back to examine some of my experiences of growing up on one (tracks 2-5), before musing a bit on the passage of time and the resulting shifts in perspective (tracks 6 & 7). I was keen to avoid romanticising or idealising any of it, which again, is why the first verse of this song is focused on some of the kind of "ugly" aspects of the physical environment - the burnt-out stolen cars and remains of a dead industry and all that. It may still kind of slump down on the sentimental side of the line I suppose, but I was actually trying to avoid that - or at least, only give it as much rein as it actually deserves.

As for the video.... for some reason I just enjoy mucking about arranging and editing these things: I suppose it makes a change from music. It's nice to have more than one creative hobby to indulge. Not that I'm taking it as seriously as "hobbyist" might suggest.

Surprising tune, quality production. Dang, really great sounding.

The vid shots are great, minus the shakiness. I've been eyeing a handheld gimbal/stabilizer thing, not as cheapp as I wish they were but helps steady your shots while still allowing for free mobility. On the other hand, I rarely get outside let alone shoot video outside so it hasn't seemed too urgent.

Here's the inspiration for thinking about it, a gent I know on a non-music forum shoots these, all handheld.

Cool stuff Dolly! Emotional, a bit melancholic - catchy too. Nice singing - great pianos, cool lead guitar. And yeah, loved to see in the world, where you crew up. :hello:
