Single Mic Recordings

After a discussion wiht Dane about flutes I started down a road about single mic recordings.
This does not concern single person performance per se but recording two or more artists...at once.
Consider some of the recoredngs of my era. Many vocals were recorded at once often on one mic.
Crosby Stills and Nash come to mind.

Recording a performance with all parties present and playing/singing at once is the only way to get the
interactions between the players in response to the music being played. This is why the harmonies
of CSN were so successful. They could hear and react the harmonies as they sang. That and they were very good
and were a once in a lifetime pairing.

Anyway, here is a link to a David Rawlings recording "Cumberland Gap",
all on a single mic. Note the D'Anglico guitar Rawlings is playing.

What happened to his Epiphone? He mostly uses an old 1930s Epiphone on his stuff with Gillian Welch.

From the front that Excel looks very much like my EX DC. The EX DC is a thin body design (think Gibson 335) that D'Angelico was unable to complete. It was finalized by his workers after his death. It is the first D'Angelico brand whose parts were made in Japan and assembled in the US. The fit and finish on this guitar is beyond compare...unlike the Eastman AR-605, my other archtop. I bought one of the first guitars in the EX DC series. It has a nice tobacco sunburst (more like burnt grape) and the same pic guard and the same tail piece as the Excel. The newer EX DC models have a mid body string anchors. Mine is HEAVY. I would not want to have that hanging from my neck for a couple hours.

Here he is with the Epiphone. It’s a 1935. I was told it was found in an attic in Nashville.
