Thank you Ivan. I try. I replaced my powered desktop monitors for a passive set of JBL 4410 studio monitors. This week I had to buy a new A2D converter as the old Edirol unit started dropping input channels. I bought a Motu 828se. Man you talk about spaghetti. It has more inputs and outputs. I am still working on setting levels. Since the monitors are passive I had to have an amp. Found a Hafler P3100 which was a good match for the JBL monitors. I am currently trying to tie in a Pioneer RT-707 reel to reel. The others will come later when I figure the source levels out on this.

But what really helped was finding the Tokyo Dawn VSTs. They a have a set of EQs and compressors that work great both in mixing and mastering. Did some reading on loudness levels too so now I have some measure of output levels.

Nice variation to electronic stuff. I have JBL LS R305 actives myself - they are pretty good too.

So what VSTi did you use for the guitar bits Marty? Really nice and evocative vibe as I recall was usual with your work.

I used several from TDR (Tokyo Dawn Records) VST. Each track starts with Nova GE, a highly versatile 6 band parametric EQ and compressor(s). Each band has its own compressor. This recording was a bit brittle so I added a de-edger on the rhythm. That goes into a reverb vst from Cakewalk. The output goes into a compressor/limiter for the track output. All three tracks have these VSTs. The rhythm goes into TDT/s SlickEQ which is sort of like a 6 band compressor. It allows for the width adjustment and placement for specific frequencies. It is a nice way to spread the rhythm track. All tracks end up in the master track where the Kotelnikov compressor is applied then passed to a final limiter. The limiter is just to monitor the loudness of the overall output.

I've used Nova before - tis cool.

You should try the Kotelnikov mastering compressor. There is a free version like Nova. If you got the cash I would suggest the SkickEQ it really enhances the stage image of the music.
